“With a flavour described as buttery sweet, this taste test winner is a medium sized, dark green, gem type romaine. -Medium size gem type cos with a dense, blanched, sweet flavoured heart -Dark green, upright leaves -Uniform, variety with commercial merit size, dense, bleached heart -Holds well in field -Four season lettuce -Looser habit than other gems trialed allowing for ease in cleaning But don’t be fooled by its flavour – with it’s mid size upright, blistered leaves and a looser habit while still forming a blanched/bleached heart, ‘Sweetheart Gem’ shows great commercial grower merit. It holds well in the field (resists bolting) and in polytunnel trials showed resilience against downy mildew. This was a selection from Wild Garden Seeds ‘Irene Green Gem’ that we have been refining since 2019. Great four season lettuce – thriving in summer heat over 35C as well as an unheated polytunnel in Southern Victoria winter.”
