Description
‘Melaton’ leek is an open pollinated variety derived from the F1 hybrid leek ‘Belton’ through recurrent mass selection. This is a good fall/winter leek that is dark in colour, upright, maintains its quality throughout an extended harvest period, and produces a long shank with low pest damage. Plants were selected to retain key qualities of Belton such as maturity, shank lenght, colour depth, and leaf orientation, but with the advantage of reproducing as an OP so that others can grow and sell seeds. Melaton plants are somewhat less uniform in size than Belton plants, which is consistent with anticipated differences between hybrid and OP leeks. This variety was developed by Melanie Sylvestre in Vancouver, BC.
