Description
I’m looking for new talent in “being a crisphead.” The crisphead lettuce has endured a lot of abuse for about a half century now on account of “iceberg syndrome,” the notion that head lettuce has nothing but crunch and water to offer. In reality, that was just one kind of crisphead grown in one kind of environment. The realm of crisp-head possibilities is much wider than that, and local grown isn’t like what gets shipped in. ‘Headhunter Mix’ is a 4th generation selected population coming out of the cross ‘Reine d’ Glaces’ X ‘Jester.’ This F4 stage is a perfect time for making selections in a region of intended use, which is what I will be doing, but others can do it too. In 2-4 years, we can all have our favorite head lettuce that is suited to our location. One photo cannot take in all the diversity here. Many shades of green, some with red spots or streaks, with leaf margins that are wavy, toothed, crisped, or frilled, in head sizes from mini to midi to maxy, the heads shaped from spherical to oval to pointed. A Headhunter’s parade of possibilities.
