Description
This interesting variation in seedhead formation popped out of our breeding population in 2018, probably originating in either Kaslala or WSU germplasm. The panicle appears to be comprised of many upward pointing fingers (or dreads, or foxtails, or flames). My initial attraction was aesthetic, then I thought about airflow through the mature seedhead, and only later did I appreciate some large-seeded plants and a wide range of seed colors, from purple-red to pink to golden to snow white. The panicle colors range from burgundy to red and pink, orange and yellow-white, ivory to the lightest white. Iām pretty sure this will be a better ornamental quinoa for cut flower use. Best to plant this about 1-2ā apart for making long single stems for cutting. For grain, 4-6ā apart direct seeded will give the highest yield. This is my breeding gene pool containing all the variations.
