Description
“Aloha #9 Oregon-selected Brittlesweet sweetness genetics (Bt2) from Molokai, Hawaii. Open pollinated, with both yellow and white kernels. A crisp sweetness. Plants 10 – 12 feet tall, ears 7 or 8 inches long, 115 days +/- to maturity here in Oregon. This is an Oregon-adapted line of Hawaiian Brittlesweet #9. Glenn Teves of University of Hawaii Extension provided me with both yellow and white lines of Hawaiian Brittlesweet #9 corn. His source was Hawaiian Supersweet #9 populations developed by James Brewbaker (University of Hawaii). I mixed the seeds from the yellow and white lines and have grown 3 generations of the seed here in Oregon (2018). I have been selecting foremost for what can finish here at 42°+ latitude, but also selecting for health and vigor and against a number of diseases which were present in the first generation. I have further been selecting for a white with yellow kernel coloration, that is, only choosing ears with some yellow kernels but many that are white.”
