Description

“Jupiter Snow Pea, bred in Bendigo, Australia, is a deep purple-podded true snow pea. Jupiter produces medium sized pods, held high on 1 -1.5 metre plants with resistance to powdery mildew. The plants require trellising. Pods are borne in pairs, and are sweet, low in fibre., with strings along the pod seams. The pod colour fades upon cooking in water. Parents were an unknown snow pea variety and a commercially available purple-podded pea ‘Purple Podded’. Early generations of the cross exhibited all combinations of pod colour from green to deep purple, high, medium and low fibre pods, no, medium and high resistance to powdery mildew, and a range of plant heights. Selection occurred over 6 generations and focused on purple pods, good pod flavour and low fibre, powdery mildew resistance, and high seed emergence. The variety exhibits a small amount of residual plant to plant genetic variation. Occasional plants produce pods with purple blushes rather than deep purple colouration. Plants may also express modest variation in height. Growers should consider practicing further selection to isolate lines suited to their conditions and requirements.”
